UN Global Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
The United Nations Goal 6 is to make sure everyone has clean water and good toilets by 2030, and that water is used in a safe and careful way.
Water is essential for life, yet millions of people around the world still lack access to safe and clean drinking water. United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) focuses on ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by the year 2030.
This goal addresses several critical issues: improving access to safe drinking water, building better sanitation systems, promoting hygiene practices, protecting water-related ecosystems, and supporting water efficiency and treatment technologies. Today, about 1 in 3 people globally do not have access to safe drinking water, and over half the world lacks proper sanitation. These conditions contribute to the spread of deadly diseases and hinder economic development.
Goal 6 also emphasizes the importance of managing water resources responsibly. It encourages countries to reduce pollution, reuse wastewater, and work together across borders to protect shared water sources.
Achieving SDG 6 can lead to better public health, stronger communities, gender equality (as women and girls often bear the burden of water collection), and environmental protection. Clean water and sanitation are the foundation for building a safe, fair, and sustainable future for all.
